American Studies Mission Statement

The American Studies course combines two previously isolated disciplines in order to explore the American Experience in greater depth and breadth. This course seeks to blur the line between English and History, recognizing that these disciplines are inextricably intertwined.

Yet, more than simply an interdisciplinary effort, American Studies is also a multidisciplinary course in which students can interpret American life through a variety of sources, including art, architecture, music, movies and television.

The major thrust of the course is to help students develop the critical reading, thinking, and writing skills needed to become thoughtful investigators of American culture. The study of America's past will push students to recognize and challenge preconceptions, to develop their own insights into the nature of American culture, and to cultivate a "connecting habit of mind."
